Perspectives on Disability and Accommodation

2010 ~ 260 pp ~ ISBN 978-0-9738181-3-0

This book, edited by Kelly Williams-Whitt, RN, MBA, PhD, University of Lethbridge and Daphne Taras, MA, MBA, LLM, PhD, Dean at the University of Saskatchewan, Edwards School of Business is divided into three parts:

Part I: Foundations of the Duty to Accommodate: Perspectives from the Legal Profession - This section of the book includes four chapters that address legal complications that have arisen from the duty to accommodate disability in the workplace. The authors analyze difficult issues that have emerged as ethically-based, legal imperatives meet the reality of the workplace practice.

Part II: Practicing Disability Accommodation: Perspectives from the Workplace - This section gives voice to those on the front lines: employees with disabilities, employers, unions and case managers. Each of the six chapters in this section offers a unique perspective that highlights best practices as well as common challenges and also integrates research and theory, giving rise to new ideas that may help eliminate barriers for those re-entering the workforce as well as those charged with facilitating that process.

Part III: Accommodation Partners: Perspectives from Outside the Employment Relationship - This section of the book incorporates the views of accommodation partners from outside of the employment relationship. The role of physicians, physical therapists, vocational rehabilitation, and workers compensation boards are critically (and sometimes humorously) examined, to illustrate public policies that work, and those that don't.
