Challenges in Disability Management: A Resource Manual for Return to Work Practitioners

2004 ~ 106 pp ~ ISBN 0-9687859-3-X

Every return to work practitioner learns very quickly that the scope of knowledge needed to be effective in the field of disability management and return to work is vast. The individual is required to have some understanding of such diverse areas as disability management theory and practice; legislation and benefit programs; labour management relations; communication and problem-solving skills; disability case management; return to work coordination; health, psychosocial and functional aspects of disability; injury and illness prevention; program management and evaluation; and ethical and professional conduct. In addition, the return to work practitioner must become familiar with medical diagnosis and terminology, job requirements at the worksite, physical capacity assessments, job accommodation, dispute resolution, documentation and report writing - to name but a few.

As any one of these areas requires an individual to undergo years of study and practice, it is clear from the outset that to be an expert in all of these areas is impossible. The best the return to work practitioner can do is to have a solid foundation from which to provide service, to continuously learn while doing the job, and to know where to obtain expert advice.

The purpose of this manual is to be a resource for the return to work practitioner and is to be used in conjunction with basic texts or other handbooks on disability management. It is designed to assist the return to work practitioner in undertaking some of the more challenging tasks they are assigned.

The manual is divided into two parts. Part I discusses some disabling conditions that present particular challenges to the practitioner. In Part II, approaches to handling some challenging areas of practice related to many workers or to particular work settings are presented.

As it would be impossible in a few pages to answer all the readers' questions regarding the role and process of disability management related to each condition or area, the manual provides a list of resources where return to work practitioners are encouraged to continue their own research.
