The message could not be clearer. Persons with disabilities are being deprived of the opportunity to participate in the workplace at an estimated annual financial cost that is measured in billions of dollars. These costs do not account for the immeasurable personal costs that are borne by workers and their families. We can no longer afford to carry on as we have in the past. Although some steps have been taken by enlightened governments, unions and companies, much more remains to be done.
Research shows that modifying a workplace or changing job specifications to accommodate disabled workers is not only the right thing to do but it makes good economic sense. Getting disabled workers back on the job means that everybody wins: disabled workers are given a chance to maintain their income; the workplace retains an experienced employee; and the government gains a tax-payer instead of a tax-consumer.
