The Challenge to Lead: The Rewards of Disability Management

~ ~ ISBN

The Challenge to Lead documents the recent growth of workplace-based disability management programs across Canada. This proven return-to-work model for injured and disabled workers is meeting with growing support from labour, corporate, and government leaders. Disability management has become an increasingly positive force in the Canadian marketplace. It is a strategy that produces not only better workplace environments, but also social and economic benefits.

The video features, amongst others, prominent Canadian leaders* such as

The Honourable Pierre Pettigrew, Minister, Human Resources Development Canada
The Honourable Glen Clark, Premier, Province of British Columbia
Robert (Bob) White, President, Canadian Labour Congress
Adam Zimmerman, Corporate Director (former CEO), Noranda Forest Products
Mary Cameron, President and CEO, Workers Compensation Board of Alberta
Audrey Cormack, President, Alberta Federation of Labour
Pierre Seguin, MD, Medical Director, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation
Tom Stephens, President and CEO, MacMillan Bloedel Limited
Cathy Walker, National Health and Safety Director, CAW/TCA Canada
Glen Wright, Chair, Workplace Safety & Insurance Board of Ontario

The Challenge to Lead demonstrates the growing success of disability management as a practical and effective solution to disability in the workplace. From its development in British Columbia, to its recent expansion across Canada, disability management continues to win the support of influential Canadians who recognize it as socially and economically sound practice. It represents a unifying force in the workplace, bringing together both labour and management in a productive and mutually beneficial initiative.

In 1998, the National Institute signed a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding with the International Labour Organization which is expected to lead to the first ILO Code of Practice in Disability Management. This Code of Practice will provide invaluable guidelines to workplaces and ensure fair and equal treatment for workers with disabilities around the world. This not only confirms Canada’s place as a leader in the field of disability management, but promises a new and higher profile for return-to-work policies.

*Many of these people have moved onto new challenges since this video was made.

"A human life is too precious a resource to waste. The experience we have in our work force is our strength and we cannot waste it. Our mission is to communicate, to discuss, and to get everyone involved in making our company a place where we not only welcome disabled workers, but we build on that as a core strength."
