Disability Management Program Graduates: Making a Difference in the Workplace

February 1997 ~ 23 pp ~ ISBN 0-9682480-1-2

Disability Management Program Graduates: Making a Difference in the Workplace is a comprehensive analysis of the impact of disability management programs and the National Institute's education program.

The research was conducted by Dr. Norman C. Hursh, a Director of Industrial Rehabilitation and Disability Management from Boston University.

Doctor Hursh interviewed workers, management and labour representatives at three Canadian workplace-based disability management programs and completed a review of international literature on disability management practices and outcomes. Each workplace program involved disability management practitioners who had successfully completed the university certified training program developed by the National Institute of Disability Management and Research.

This publication reports on the successes of programs coordinated by trained disability management professionals. Doctor Hursh found that all three programs experienced significant improvement in return-to-work rates of injured or ill workers and realized substantial savings in workers' compensation or short-term and long-term disability costs. Doctor Hursh also interviewed workers who had participated in the return-to-work process and found a high rate of satisfaction and praise for the disability management programs and the efforts of the practitioners.
