PCU-WHS identifies link between disability and poverty

Across Canada, 23% of people living in poverty are individuals with disabilities. Considering that 80% of impairments occur during one's working life, without an effective return to work program, the prospects for workers who acquire a disabling condition is not optimal and often leads to marginalization due to financial, social, psychological and poor health outcomes.

The World Health Organization (WHO) in their World Report on Disability identify that this pattern is consistent across the majority of developed and developing economies, with people with disabilities accounting for a disproportionate percentage of those living below the poverty line.
