Code of Practice for Disability Management, 2nd edition

2004 ~ 53 ~ ISBN 0-9687859-7-2

The last two decades have seen significant developments in our legal understanding of the duty to accommodate and in the evidence of what practices work and what do not. The Supreme Court of Canada has rendered a number of landmark decisions and researchers across Canada have added substantially to our knowledge.

A consensus among representatives of workers, employers, government, providers, researchers and people with disabilities indicated that a guide to the successful implementation of workplace based programs designed to facilitate (re)integration and accommodation of people with disabilities could be developed. With the successful completion of an international Code of Practice by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in 2002, the Canadian Code of Practice, first devised in 2000, is revised to:

· integrate the Canadian legislative framework to make it more Canada specific;

· integrate significant international developments, especially the World Health Organization’s (WHO) new International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health and the ILO’s Code of practice on managing disability in the workplace; and

· integrate any new practices that had been demonstrated with good evidence to improve the prospects of successful employment of people with disabilities.
