Support for BC Workplaces to Assess, Improve or Develop a DM Program

This initiative is being delivered through the NIDMAR DM Program Assessment Services. It is comprised of two levels of opportunity:
  • a free assessment of current Disability Management and Return to Work workplace structures, policies and programs, which also provides a program improvement map going forward; and
  • a potential subsidy of up to $7,500 designed to support workplace efforts in addressing issues identified in the program assessment.
To learn more about the development of the audit / assessment tools and review the 16 program elements in detail that are covered by the assessment, please refer to the website at:  Audit and Assessment Elements

A new video is available that provides details of the process involved.

The Workplace Disability Management Assessment: An employer's guide to reducing costs and retaining valuable workers

This 12-minute video promotes the benefits of undertaking an assessment of a workplace program. As Bill Dyer, then Director of Program Assessments puts it, "...we are not here to point fingers and tell people that they haven't been doing their jobs. In fact, the assessment is a supportive and confidential discussion with a consensus-based approach. And the only person who gets the report is the person who requested it."

Section 1 – Free DM Program Assessment

This opportunity provides BC workplaces with a free program assessment and subsequent improvement plan of their current Return to Work / Disability Management program. The program assessments will be carried out through licensed auditors who have completed a dedicated training program in the use of the audit/assessment tools and who also have achieved the CDMP professional designation.

This initiative mirrors the highly successful DM Excellence initiative launched in 2008 in BC, which resulted in dramatic, significant, and durable improvement in Return to Work outcomes, with best practices ultimately being encoded into the collective agreement language covering 150,000 workers, 4 unions, and over 200 employers in BC's health care sector. The support under this initiative will be available to all BC employers regardless of sector or size to develop and implement and/or improve their Disability Management and Return to Work programs.

The Workplace Disability Management Assessment (WDMA) tool, unlike the full Consensus Based Disability Management Audit, is optimized to allow for an accurate program assessment through a face-to-face interview, conducted onsite or online, and will include in the Occupational Safety and Health element, of the 16 elements included in the assessment, questions on organizational preparedness related to a pandemic.

The Assessment protocol process is administered under the auspices of the International Disability Management Standards Council (IDMSC) and in Canada is administered by the National Institute of Disability Management and Research (NIDMAR) through licensed auditors.

Section 2 – DM Program Improvement Subsidy

The second opportunity under this component provides BC employers the option to submit an application for a subsidy of up to $7,500 to implement the gap analysis recommendations resulting from the completion of the program assessment.

An Advisory Group comprised of senior level representatives from the various relevant stakeholder groups involved in Disability Management programs will review all applications for this subsidy and make decisions with regard to applications received, as well as provide overall policy and roll-out direction.
